Miles for smiles is now an official campus organization
Drumroll, please! Miles for Smiles is now registered with the University of Maryland OrgSync. Join us online!
Thank you for running with miles for smiles!
Miles for Smiles was yet again a huge success--thanks to you! Despite the chilly weather, over 100 smiling faces came out to run along the cross-campus route. We raised over $1784 in total, which can provide better oral healthcare through hygiene supplies, sterilization equipment, or instruments. Every runner counts, and every dollar matters. Your kindness is a reminder to the people of rural Honduras that despite the geographical and culture gap, they are not forgotten.
Thank you so much to all of the Miles for Smiles eboard team, who worked for the past year to bring the race to life-- Vice Presidents Jenny Youn and Isaac Jeong, Logistics Coordinator Alice Li, Publicity Chair Eileen Chang (who designed the t-shirts and logo), Publicity Specialist Hargeet Singh, and Senior Advisor Maria Oei.
Miles for Smiles will be featured in the Do Good Challenge Pavillion this Maryland Day on campus on April 30, from 10am-4pm. Come out and visit to put your Do Good Dollars on this cause!

Recent News
Thank you to everyone for coming out to our 5K last year! We were able to purchase a mobile dental unit this year that will be used to provide free dental care in future Global Dental Brigades mission trips! The majority of dental units used at the mobile clinics are old and out-dated, and if one breaks down, there is no backup. Make sure to keep up with out social media [Instagram,Facebook,& Twitter] to be notified about the future events we have planned for this semester! *Hint: We may be giving away some free teeth whitening kits!

Miles for Smiles 5K Run/Walk
When: TBD
Where: Mckeldin Mall
Why: This event is a fundraising opportunity for the campus community to support the oral care of disadvantaged children in Honduras. Invite your friends, roommates, teammates, coworkers and anyone else your heart desires! This event is open to the public. We will hold the event rain or shine!
Join us on April 3 and walk, run, or crawl a 5K, knowing that you are granting a child the right to a healthy, painless smile.
To receive a FREE T-shirt the day of the event, make a minimum $10 donation to our GoFundMe account on or before March 12th and pick it up at our registration table. If you make your donation after this date, you may still be able to get a T-shirt while supplies last. Every donation counts, no matter how big or small, so give what you can. All proceeds will go toward dental-care packages, equipment, and instruments that Miles for Smiles staff will send to children in rural Honduras.
The Miles for Smiles 5K symbolizes the hours of walking that patients in Honduras journey to receive basic dental care. Our mission is to raise oral health awareness in our community and to raise funds to provide better dental services to families in underprivileged areas of Honduras. Miles for Smiles works closely with UMD Global Dental Brigades, which is the world's largest student-led global health and sustainable development organization. The organization’s volunteers travel to Honduras every winter to set up mobile clinics in rural villages, to assist dental professionals in providing appropriate treatments, and to provide oral hygiene workshops to children. Every dollar raised stretches far and wide in helping Global Dental Brigades provide free healthcare to a vulnerable population.
Last year, Miles for Smiles entered the Do Good Challenge held at the University of Maryland, a competition among student-run philanthropic organizations to encourage their peers to Do Good for the community. Miles for Smiles won first place and the Audience Choice Award in this challenge, allowing us to make an even bigger contribution to the community in Honduras.

Miles for smiles brings five autoclaves, ultrasonic to Honduras
Without further ado, here is the ultrasonic and one of five autoclaves that you helped purchase by running with Miles for Smiles and voting during the Do Good Challenge. Upon speaking with year-round Global Brigade staff in Honduras, we learned that the most useful way to use the 5K funds would be to purchase sterilization equipment, and we did just that. The doctors were ecstatic to have this level of sterilization in the clinic, protecting the patients and enabling the doctors to provide a higher quality of care than ever before. Dr. Osiris, head dentist of Global Brigades in Honduras, was also able to purchase dental instruments to be used specifically for brigades.
Once again, visiting Honduras reminded me how lucky we are to be born in a place with easy access to healthcare, clean water, and... basic necessities. The doctors and community workers that I met sacrificed their time and money to help those in rural areas. With no personal gain, they give back simply because they can. The brigade captures the spirit of what it means to be in the healthcare profession, and I am honored to have participated for a second year. There is still so much left that we can do--get ready for this year's 5K!

Miles for smiles wins umd Do Good Challenge
For eight short weeks the Miles for Smiles team worked tirelessly to do the most good possible to benefit the children in Honduras without access to dental care. Our hard work and your support paid off. On Tuesday, April 28, 2015 Miles for Smiles won the $5,000 first place prize in the projects category and the $2,500 Audience Choice Award at the fourth annual Do Good Challenge. Linda Powers and Laura Gonzalez, seniors '15, pitched at the finals event and their presentation convinced the judges that Miles for Smiles was the most worthy cause.
With the $5,000 dollars we won, we will provide 2,200 dental hygiene kits, a portable x-ray, a generator and an extraction kit. We are currently in deliberation over how to spend the remaining $2,500. We would love your suggestions. The next annual Miles for Smiles 5k is in the works. Be sure to keep up to date on our Facebook page and this website for details and developments.
